A to Z Challenge: K is for King

Written by

crown

When Henry VII died in 1509, a popular, 18-year-old prince, known for his love of hunting and dancing, became King. No one then could predict that Henry VIII would become one of the most famous Kings in English history—nor could they imagine he would be more well known for his exploits with women than anything he did as a ruler.

A good King should be confident, brave and intelligent. Henry could certainly check off those boxes. In fact, during his reign, he became known at the "father of the Royal Navy." When he became King, there were only five royal ships. But by his death, Henry had built a navy of around 50. Henry also built the first naval dock in Britain at Portsmouth, and in 1546, established the Navy Board.

Unfortunately, these successes are overshadowed now, as King Henry VIII is most remembered for his six wives—and, of course, the beheading of Anne Boleyn.

In ANNE & HENRY, Henry also struggles with his "legacy" while trying to crawl out from under his brother's shadow.

Tomorrow we move on to the eetter L, but in the meantime, don't forget to scroll through the rest of the blogs on the A to Z Challenge—you can find the list here

Apart, they are bound to destroy themselves. Together, they are bound to destroy each other.

Henry Tudor's life has been mapped out since the day he was born: student president, valedictorian, Harvard Law School, and a stunning political career just like his father's. But ever since the death of Henry's brother—perfect, high-achieving Arthur—his family has been twice as demanding. And now Henry's trapped: forbidden from pursuing a life as an artist or dating any girl who's not Tudor approved.

Then Anne Boleyn crashes into his life.

Anne is wild, brash and outspoken. She is everything Henry is not allowed to be—or to want. But soon Anne is all he can think about. His mother, his friends, and even his girlfriend warn him away, yet his desire for Anne consumes him. Henry is willing to do anything to be with her. But once he has her, their romance could destroy them both.

Inspired by the true story of Anne Boleyn and King Henry VIII, Anne & Henry reimagines the intensity, love, and betrayal between one of the most infamous couples of all time.

A to Z Challenge: I is for Ius

Written by

DawnOkay, maybe it's a little narcissistic to make myself the "I" post—but it fits with my Tudor-inspired theme considering my young adult contemporary—ANNE & HENRY—is a modern retelling of King Henry the VIII and Anne Boleyn's torrid romance.

I'll try not to make it too painful, though :-)

My bio below...and below that, ALL about ANNE & HENRY. (Which is the far more exciing part...)

DAWN IUS is a short-story author, novelist, screenwriter, professional editor, and communications specialist. She is co-founder and senior editor of Vine Leaves Literary Journal, Assistant Managing Editor of the International Thriller Writers’ e-zine, The Big Thrill, and the author of ten educational graphic novels published by the Alberta Canola Producers Commission. Her first contemporary young adult novel, ANNE & HENRY, will be published Fall 2015 from Simon Pulse, and her yet unpublished novel HEARTLESS was recently optioned for development of a TV show by Verite Films.

Dawn also writes young adult thriller and paranormal fiction under the last name DALTON. Her short story, THREAD OF THE PAST was included in the SPIRITED anthology (Leap Books, 2012), and her novel, KILLER’S INSTINCT (Leap Books, 2013), co-written with Judith Graves, was nominated for the Silver Falchion award. As well, her short story DRUNK will be published in an Alice-in-Wonderland-inspired anthology, FALLING FOR ALICE, April 2015, by Vine Leaves Press.

When she’s not slaying fictional monsters, she’s geeking out over fairy tales, Jack Bauer, Halloween, sports cars, and all things that go bump in the night. Dawn lives in Alberta, Canada, with her husband, Jeff, and their giant English Mastiff, Roarke.

Erm...so that's me.

We return to regularly scheduled ACTUAL Tudor posts tomorrow with the letter J. But don't forget to scroll through the rest of the blogs on the A to Z Challenge—you can find the list here

A to Z Challenge: J is for Jane (Seymour)

Written by

Jane Seymour"Plain Jane" Seymour, King Henry VIII's third wife, was everything that Anne Boleyn was not—obedient, quiet, and, frankly, far less alluring. But after a torrid romance with the woman he beheaded, Henry was likely more than ready to settle down with someone less...controversial.

Apparently, he was above (public) reproach though, as Henry married Jane on May 20, 1536, without incident—the day after Anne was executed. Jane was crowned Queen a month later. Unfortunately, her reign lasted only a year as she died giving birth to Henry's only legitimate son, Edward.

Jane is the only one of Henry's wives to be given a Queen's funeral, and his only consort to be buried next to him in St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. (He wasn't kidding about his NEED for a male heir...she was definitely favored...)

A to Z Challenge: H is for Henry

Written by

thDriven, haunted, charming, magnetic.

These are the words used to describe Henry Tudor in my contemporary young adult re-telling of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII's torrid love affair.

But they're the same words that could have described historic Henry, as well.

While there's no question the real Henry didn't age well, and the pictures we see of him most often show his later years—divorcing, beheading, and running a country clearly took its toll—the Henry of earlier years was thinner, driven, charming, and yes, magnetic.

And don't even get my started about the King Henry played by Johnathan Rhys Myers. ::swoon::

Henry Tudor was flawed. He made bad decisions. He beheaded his wife. In the end, he wasn't a very likeable guy.

And yet he remains one of the most compelling historical figures of all time.

I'm glad I got to write about him when he was still a teenage heartthrob. <grin>

Check back tomorrow for a Tudor letter I. And don't forget to check out the rest of the blogs on the A to Z Challenge—you can find the list here

A to Z Challenge: G is for Gout

Written by

HenryGout may seem like a King Henry VIII issue (and it absolutely was), but statistics show that the number of people suffering from this painful, arthritic-like affliction are on the rise again.

Gout is a medical condition usually characterized by recurrent attacks of acute inflammatory arthritis—a red, tender, hot swollen joint.

Dietary causes account for 12% of gout, and include a strong association with the consumption of alcohol, meat and seafood.

Is it any wonder then that this “disease of kings” caused Henry all kinds of pain?

Despite the increasing number of gout patients throughout North America, there are no instances of gout in ANNE & HENRY. You’re welcome.

Plus. I’m saving you from an icky picture of gout inflammation by posting this slightly less-icky picture of King Henry VIII.

Henry’s in the spotlight again tomorrow for the letter H (obviously). And don't forget to check out the rest of the blogs on the A to Z Challenge—you can find the list here

A to Z Challenge: F is for Friends

Written by

th-2Everyone knows about King Henry VIII's women—six infamous wives, multiple mistresses and two daughters. But how much do we know about the men he hung out with? Did Henry VIII have friends? The jury's still out.

He certainly had support, particularly from a tight group of "bros" including the Thomas quartet—Wolsey, More, Cranmer, and Cromwell.

Unfortunately, Henry seemed to have as much trouble keeping friends as he did wives.

Poor Thomas Wolsey died on his journey to trial after failing to give the King a much sought-after annulment to Catherine.

After failing to swear the oath of succession, Thomas More was executed on Tower Hill. (I guess him turning down the position of chancellor really pissed Henry off.)

Thomas Cranmer survived Henry (and their rocky friendship) but later found conflict with Henry and Catherine's daughter, Mary.

Thomas Cromwell seemed to be the best of Henry's pals—until he tried to play matchmaker, encouraging the King to marry Anne of Cleves. The marriage was a disaster, and true to form, Henry blamed Cromwell, which resulted in his execution—on the exact day Henry married Katherine Howard.

Henry's friends in ANNE & HENRY don't travel quite the same rocky road as his historic predecessors, but they are high school students, and you know how THAT goes. <grin>

See you tomorrow as I tackle a Tudor "G." And don't forget to check out the rest of the blogs on the A to Z Challenge—you can find the list here
