A to Z Challenge: Z is for Zen

Written by

zenI scoured the Internet for Tudor-related "Z" words, and clicked through glossary after glossary of Tudor-inspired terms. But aside from Zany and Zealous (both of which could be used to describe Henry VIII at some point, I suppose), there are a sad number of "Z" entries—and neither of those words inspired a post worthy of The End of the 2015 A to Z Blogging Challenge.

And so...I'm going with Zen, which I admit is a bit of a cheat. But the thing is, challenges like this—the kind that force you to write daily, even a paragraph or two—can be stressful. With deadlines looming, and four blogs to manage throughout the month, I admit, there are days I faltered a little.

Now as I celebrate "the end" of this challenge, and realize, for the first time ever, I accomplished the goal—26 posts on an A to Z theme—I'm feeling quite...zen. (Hey, if I could use R for Relief, I'd be all over that.)

Congratulations to everyone who made it through the challenge, and thank all of YOU for sticking by me, even when my posts were giant stretches in Tudor relevance. I had fun, and hope you did as well!

22453734And for the last time (in this challenge) Anne & Henry—coming from Simon Pulse, September 1, 2015.

Anne
Wild, brazen, mischievous, bewitching
Henry
Driven, haunted, charming, magnetic

Apart, they are bound to destroy themselves. Together, they are bound to destroy each other.

Henry Tudor's life has been mapped out since the day he was born: student president, valedictorian, Harvard Law School, and a stunning political career just like his father's. But ever since the death of Henry's brother—perfect, high-achieving Arthur—his family has been twice as demanding. And now Henry's trapped: forbidden from pursuing a life as an artist or dating any girl who's not Tudor approved.

Then Anne Boleyn crashes into his life.

Anne is wild, brash and outspoken. She is everything Henry is not allowed to be—or to want. But soon Anne is all he can think about. His mother, his friends, and even his girlfriend warn him away, yet his desire for Anne consumes him. Henry is willing to do anything to be with her. But once he has her, their romance could destroy them both.

Inspired by the true story of Anne Boleyn and King Henry VIII, Anne & Henry reimagines the intensity, love, and betrayal between one of the most infamous couples of all time.

Tomorrow is the LAST DAY of the A to Z Challenge! Check back tomorrow for "the end". In the meantime, don't forget to take a look at the rest of the blogs on the A to Z Challenge. You can find the list of them here!

A to Z Challenge: Y is for Young Adult

A to Z Challenge: X is for eXecution

Written by

executionThis picture, taken by my dear friend Anne Tibbets, is a photograph of the exact place Queen Anne Boleyn was eXecuted at the Tower of London, May 19, 1536.

Honestly, I didn't expect the lump of emotion I felt when I received this image.

Obviously, I knew King Henry VIII had beheaded his wife in what was perhaps the most memorable eXecution of his time (though, to be clear, she was one of many he beheaded during his reign), but while researching for ANNE & HENRY, I tried to keep my emotions at arm's length. I've carefully avoided watching Anne's final days on TV shows or movies (I watched only the first two seasons of The Tudors even though I loved it...) and have skipped reading anything that goes too much into depth of her eXecution.

But this picture—in all its haunting beauty—made my throat constrict.

Regardless of your stance on whether Anne Boleyn was guilty of the crimes for which she was beheaded, the event is one of the most significant in Tudor history, and perhaps one of the most controversial of the past.

The question I am most asked about ANNE & HENRY is how I handled this historical fact, what possible parralel I could have drawn. I admit, I'm excited for you to find out.

Only two days of the A to Z Challenge remain! Check back tomorrow for my Tudor-inspired Y. In the meantime, don't forget to take a look at the rest of the blogs on the A to Z Challenge. You can find the list of them here!

A to Z Challenge: W is for Witch

Written by

Anne BRegardless of her (short) status as Queen, Anne Boleyn was not impervious to the rumor mill. In some stories, she has six fingers, and in others she has three breasts or moles all over her body, and in many cases, she was said to be a witch.

It's true that she seems to have "bewitched" Henry VIII, for his lust for her was instant and passionate and all-consuming. The guy even denounced his religion just so he could secure an anullment from Catherine and marry Anne—but there was no "evidence" to support the claims that she was a witch, and thus was never charged as one. (Though, not being a witch didn't save her from execution.)

Much like the "Anne" in my contemporary young adult, ANNE & HENRY, it's more likely that Anne's "bewitching" powers had more to do with her feminine charm than anything supernatural.

Of the many—many!—rumors about Anne Boleyn, which ones are you most likely to believe?

The A to Z Challenge is back tomorrowwith a tricky letter X. In the meantime, don't forget to take a look at the rest of the blogs on the A to Z Challenge. You can find the list of them here!

A to Z Challenge: V is for Vegas

Written by

VegasYou're right, Las Vegas has absolutely nothing to do with the historic Tudors, aside from the fact that both Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn liked to "gamble" and play cards.

But, in Anne & Henry, the "gambling" theme goes a bit further than just the Texas Hold Em scene (one of my most favorites to write.)

Without giving too much away, Henry and his friends attend a murder mystery party with a Vegas-inspired theme. There's even a mention (or two) of Elvis!

Interesting—and totally not planned—Vegas is the backdrop for my Fall 2016 young adult contemporary, the yet-unnamed "heist" book featuring a kick ass protagonist and some drool-worthy muscle cars. I am loving every bit of this WIP so far—but then, I do have an addiction to cars that go fast.

The A to Z Challenge breaks tomorrow, but is back Monday with the letter W, which I promise, has much more to do with Tudor history than today's V post. In the meantime, take a look at the rest of the blogs on the A to Z Challenge. You can find the list of them here!

A to Z Challenge: U is for Urian

Written by

UrianI admit, I had to dig deep for today's post—not a lot of "U" words in the Tudor realm. BUT...did you know that Anne Boleyn had a dog? A greyhound named Urian. (How lucky for me!)

She received him as a gift from a man called William Brereton, and the dog earned his name after Brereton's brother...or so some believe. Some counter that Urian is a less obscure name for Satan, a testament of how Anne really felt about the dog.

She apparently had many pets, including another dog, Purkoy, believed to be her favourite.

In Anne & Henry, Anne's dog is named Cromwell. <grin>

The A to Z Challenge is ALMOST over, but check back tomorrow for a Tudor-inspired letter V. For now, take a look at the rest of the blogs on the A to Z Challenge. You can find the list of them here!

A to Z Challenge: T is for Trial

Written by

trial

Regardless of where you stand on the innocence (or guilt, if you're in that camp) of Anne Boleyn, her trial, such as it was, remains one of history's most significant events.

Anne was charged with:

“despising her marriage and entertaining malice against the King, and following daily her frail and carnal lust.”

In all, Anne was accused of twenty acts of adultery, including incestious relations with her brother, George. The evidence gathered against her included dancing with her brother and giving money to courtiers—actions, by today's standards, that would be considered innocent. Certainly not worthy of a beheading.

Truthfully, Anne didn't stand a chance of winning. Despite a passionate love affair after several months of courting (and an annulment from Catherine that forced Henry VIII to abandon his religion), the King had already moved on (to Jane Seymour!). And on May 15, 1536, in the King's Hall, Tower of London, Anne was found guilty and sentenced to death.

But before she laid her head on the chopping block, Anne gave this poignant and moving speech, displaying, even on her death bed, her courage and strength.

“I do not say that I have always borne towards the King the humility which I owed him, considering his kindness and the great honour he showed me and the great respect he always paid me; I admit too, that often I have taken it into my head to be jealous of him… But may God be my witness if I have done him any other wrong.”

Where do you stand on the trial—and execution of Anne Boleyn?

Tomorrow, we look at a Tudor-inspired letter U. See "u" then—but in the meantime, check out the rest of the blogs on the A to Z Challenge. You can find the list of them here!

A to Z Challenge: S is for Seattle Seahawks

Written by

seahawksI know, I know, the Seattle Seahawks—awesome as they are—really have nothing to do with the Tudors, and I admit, I'm reaching DEEP here, BUT...

Anne & Henry takes place in Medina, WA, and Henry is the school quarterback. Anne is from Seattle (in the book, obviously) and of course, the Seahawks are the closest NFL team. See the links?

The Seahawks are mentioned three times in Anne & Henry, a fact I discovered when reading through the advanced review copy a few weeks ago. It was mostly accidental—but perhaps a subconcious nod to my amazing agent, Mandy Hubbard, who just might be the biggest Seahawks fan I have ever met. Trust me, you WANT her on your team.

If you haven't given up on me, check back tomorrow for a more traditional Tudor T—I think? In the meantime, check out the rest of the blogs on the A to Z Challenge. You can find the list of them here!

A to Z Challenge: R is for Religion

Written by

religionIn the Tudor period, there was a lot of debate over religion.

The court was filled with bishops and chaplins, and other religious figures—and it even defined the calendar year—the calendar was punctuated by Holy days (from which the word holidays comes).

People believed in religion, and died for their beliefs.

Which is part of the reason the people revolted when after being denied an annulment from Catherine of Aragon, Henry VIII, a once devout Catholic, went against the church—actually set up the Protestant Church of England —so that he could marry Anne Bolelyn.

England did not return to Catholicism until, somewhat ironically, it was under the rule of Queen Mary, the daughter of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. During the last few years of her reign, 300 Protestants who would not switch to Catholic beliefs, were burned to death at the stake, earning Mary the nickname, Bloody Mary.

Religion doesn't play a significant role on Anne & Henry....but politics does.

Whoot! I am caught up on the A to Z Challenge, with just a few days left until the end. How many other blogs have you checked out? You can find the list of them here!

A to Z Challenge: Q is for Queen

Written by

parr-smQ is obviously for Queen—and during Henry VIII's reign, England certainly saw a few of them. While it would be easy to write another post about Anne Boleyn (sigh, Anne), the fact is, King Henry had six wives, each of them crowned as Queen, and each remembered for their own successes—or losses.

Catherine of Aragon, the first of Henry's wives, first married to his brother. She was the most popular Queen, and had Henry's wandering eyes not laid to rest on Anne, they might have stayed together...minus that whole "no son" issue.

Anne Boleyn. Henry chased her, loved her, and then beheaded her. Their daughter, Elizabeth, became Queen Elizabeth. Sigh. I love Anne.

Jane Seymour...far less wild than Anne, and the only wife to give Henry his beloved son. Clearly that meant a lot, since she is the only of Henry's wives to be buried next to him. She died in childbirth, leaving room for...

Another Anne. Anne of Cleves wasn't much suited for royal living, and soon lost her husband to...another Kathryn. (Not very creative with names back then.)

Kathryn Howard was married to Henry for only two years before she, like Anne Boleyn, was executed—for cheating on her husband. (What's good for the goose not so good for the gander it seems...)

And finally, Henry married Katherine Parr. When Henry died, Katherine secretly married one of the King's friend, Thomas Seymour.

Whew! What a playboy.

You won't find any REAL Queens in Anne & Henry...though, young Catherine is certainly on track for the title of Prom Queen.

And yep, I'm a day late on my Q post. Catching up with R tonight and THEN, finally, blissfully, I will be back on track. How many other blogs from the A to Z Challenge have you checked out? You can find the list of them here!
